Ronaldo going to Madrid for £80m

Cristiano Ronaldo will become the most expensive player in history later this month when moves to Madrid for £80. That’s €93m and for my american readers, over $131m.

It’s insane money, especially in these times. As valuable as Ronaldo is to Utd, he’s not worth £80m – no player is. They’re wise to accept the bid. Ronaldo has always wanted to play for Real, he was never going to finish his career at Utd. Having won everything there is to win with Utd, it’s understandable Ronaldo wants out now, but by moving, the only way is down for him.

With a price tag of £80 over your head, he’ll be expected to do what he did with Utd and more. Instantly.

With £80m in the kitty, Ronaldo cannot be ‘replaced’ at Old Trafford, but Utd will be able to buy 2 or 3 players who can change the shape of the side and make us stronger as unit. Ribery has been on the cards for years. Benzema up front has also been a long term target. Both quality players. Tevez i’m sure will be mentioned also.

After Roy Keane left, Ronaldo became Utd’s most influential player. He led by his goals and attacking threat which inspired those around him. The side was built around Ronaldo. These days, Rooney is Utd’s most influential player. He’s more of a Roy Keane type leader and gives Utd aggression which is one thing Ronaldo never had.

One thing’s for sure, Utd will be a very differnt side next year. Their entire style of play will have to change now that Ronaldo is gone. Financially, nobody can criticise Utd for accepting the £80m bid. If Madrid are stupid enough to pay it, let them 🙂
