my first very important looking book

Today i got my dissertation binded. Two hardback copies, one softbound copy. I’m keeping one hardback for myself and DkIT have the honour of keeping the other two. Here’s the finished product…

Meh

It looks the part but i see it as more of a souvenir of my time in college than anything else. The reality is the content will become dated very quickly and it will be of little value to anyone other than myself. It will act as a dust catcher wherever i reside but also a trophy i can show off or laugh at later on in life.

It will be nice to flick through it in 40 years time, but even i will struggle to read it cover to cover once i’m finished presenting it in a few weeks time. It’s not that it’s not interesting, i just feel the academic structure of it all has smothered my own creativity and my ability to make it enjoyable to read.

So yes, it’s a printed, binded book with my name on it and it’s valuable in the sense it will help me get a degree but i’d prefer to print and bind this blog as i believe it’s easier and more ‘natural’ to read. There’s more ‘heart’ in it and to me that’s what matters most. The words have to mean something and look as if they’ve been crafted individually and massaged in to place as opposed to being plucked off a shelf and glued together just for the sake of doing something…

This is an area i have an interest in, so i’ve been lucky in the sense that content has flowed naturally for me. As i said before this may be 91 pages in length but i feel like i’m just skimming the surface. I’d imagine my enthusiasm will come across but in truth i struggled to find any fun in writing this mainly because it had to be written in a certain way. So for that reason, this was never going to bring out the best in me but it’s about as polished a job as i could have hoped for 4 months or so ago when i first started it.
