Yesterday i talked about installing wordpress, today i’m talking about configuring wordpress and the plugins i normally install when starting any project.
Step 1
Delete the ‘hello world’ post & ‘about’ page.
Step 2
Delete the blogroll links
Step 3
Edit general settings
Step 4
Add a friendly permalink structure
Step 5
Delete / Upgrade plugins.
Step 6
Add these plugins (don’t question it, just do it and thank me later);
- Akismet
- All in One SEO Pack
- Google XML Sitemaps
- Contact Form 7
- Viper’s Video Quicktags
- WP Super Cache
- WP-DBManager
- Google Analytics for WordPress
- Plugin Manager (my personal favourite)
Step 7
Set up google analytics / google webmaster accounts.
Step 8
Set up a Bing & Yahoo webmaster account. This isn’t necessary, but every little helps when it comes to SEO. Usually i don’t bother doing this with every site i create, but because i’m under the spotlight here i have to do things the proper way
Step 9
We’re done! Easy! If you’ve gotten this far you’re doing well. We’re well on the road to building a nice optimised wordpress-based, niche site. Next week i’ll be customizing the design and adding content and then integrating the site with social networks etc… Although the site looks empty and boring at the minute, we’ve actually done a lot of work behind the scenes – work that goes unnoticed to users and visitors most of the time…
